Randy R. Smith delivers an unconventional and simplistic instructional manuscript on creating a scrappy rag quilt.
Inspired
by his wife’s love of quilting, Smith commandeered her older sewing
machine in order to create this quilt, after she upgraded to a more
expensive, high-tech sewing machine. This, in turn, inspired Smith to
write this book, in order to pay for said machine.
Semi-novice
designer and local county fair winner, Smith’s innovative techniques
will have you creating a dynamic and unique, as well as
geometrically-stimulating, scrappy rag quilt in no time.

The newest bolts of fabric have started arriving. And my, my, my... have they brought smiles to the place.
Our goal, at First Stitches, is to serve those who have sewn for years, making beautiful quilts, articles of clothing, home decor and more. And we also hope to bring a fresh sense of creativity to the newbies in the sewing world, young and old alike.
These newest fabrics are wonderful for the latest quilting trend:
From the Modern Quilt Guild website:
"Modern quilts are primarily functional and inspired by modern design. Modern quilters work in different styles and define modern quilting in different ways, but several characteristics often appear which may help identify a modern quilt. These include, but are not limited to: the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work. "Modern traditionalism" or the updating of classic quilt designs is also often seen in modern quilting."
Quilting is an art. It's the use of colors and shapes to design and create. We hope our latest collection of fabrics will inspire and delight all realms of the quilting world.
Be sure to stop in and see it.
And don't forget, ALL fabric will be $1.00 OFF per yard during our Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, April 20th. (10am - 2pm)

The first EQ7 Club met on Thursday.
After going through Chapter One and learning the basics of how EQ7 works on your computer, we started tackling the process of designing one of my earlier quilts. I did not have a pattern for this quilt. I was at my mother's a few years back during a very ongoing snowstorm, keeping us housebound. So what do all good quilters do when housebound without any quilt books? We wing it. I was pretty please with how it turned out, but now we're going to design the quilt in EQ7 and see what variations we can come up with the program.
Should prove to be interesting!
You can still join in. (Even if you don't have EQ7, come and watch and see what this program can do!)
Next EQ7 Club is May 9th at 1pm. Call 431-1556 and reserve your seat. Cost: $5.00

Recently, I got away from the store long enough to go to a quilt show. There were many things that floated my boat, but this was by far one of the highlights.
A necklace and earrings made from the 2013 Hoffman Challenge fabric.
I just couldn't resist.

Because even when you are sewing right sides together, you see the beautiful "wrong" side as you sew (because batiks are a cloth that is traditionally made using a manual wax-resist dying technique... you see the design on both sides of the fabrics)
I decided I did not have my monthly quota of unfinished projects, so thus and therefore, I needed to start another one...
AND BESIDES THAT... I have to use up the batiks I have in my stash before I can justify using some the beautiful Hoffman and Moda batiks I have in stock. (well, truth be told, I'm using some of my new batiks anyway; I tried to resist, however, the mind is strong, but the temptation is greater)

With some help from my best friend, we put up this very nice design wall at the store.
It's going to work great! However, I think I am going to spend a lifetime, trying to figure out "do I do chevrons, do I do pinwheels, do I do it on point, do I.....??????" But at least I'm having some fun with it!
Come to the Grand Opening on April 20th, and I'll give a quick and easy demonstration on how to make these fun and colorful blocks! Then YOU can have your own blocks to play with.
